Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
