Space Traveler Discloses Depression In the Wake of Wave of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The group of women also comprised experts in multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
